“My Fourth Symphony is to my third what Beethoven’s Fourth is to his Eroica” wrote Witold LUTOSŁAWSKI in a letter to one of his friends. It is true that this piece of work, the last in this genre by the composer, sums up his symphonic style. There, we can find an atmosphere of concentration, reflection, reverie and nostalgia. Written between 1988 and 1992 after being commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the premiere of the Fourth Symphony took place on 5 February 1993 at the Music Center Pavilion in Los Angeles on the occasion of the composer’s 80th birthday (the composer conducted the orchestra himself).
The Symphony will be performed three times in Belgium in November by the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by George PEHLIVANIAN.
