Mieczysław Weinberg : The Composer

Protestant Chapel, Academy Palace, Royal Conservatory of Brussels

Chamber Music for Europe-Biennale, in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Brussels, pays tribute to the Polish composer Mieczysław Weinberg on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth (1919-1996).

Too little is known about the music of this composer, whose destiny embraces the tragic adventures of the 20th century.

Weinberg’s heritage is rich with 26 symphonies, 7 concerts, 17 string quartets, 22 sonatas for piano and other instruments, about 30 singing cycles and 7 operas and 2 ballets, as well as music for 65 films, plays and radio.

For the project, the organisers brought together Belgian and international musicians who are experts in the repertoire of chamber music, particularly that of Weinberg. Among them are the Silesian Quartet/Kwartet Śląski, Quatuor AmÔn, Karski Quartet, Trio Khaldei, Victor Chestopal (piano), Pieter Wispelwey (cello) and Jean-Michel Charlier (clarinet) with the orchestra Les Métamorphoses conducted by Raphaël Feye.
