Maciej Markowiczs erste Einzelausstellung in Berlin zeigt in einem Werks-Überblick seine kontemplativen Reflexionen über die Stadt, die er mit einer einzigartigen Technik geschaffen hat: mit einer mobilen Camera Obscura. Der in Südpolen geborene und seit sechs Jahren mit Berlin verbundene Künstler hat deren Technik in seiner künstlerischen Praxis modernisiert, indem er selbstgebaute mobile Fahrzeuge mit eingebauten Kameras verwendet. Ausgehend von den Grundkomponenten der Fotografie – Licht und lichtempfindliches Material – fotografiert Markowicz aus dem Inneren seines Vans oder Kahns.

Die Papiernegative stellen in Markowiczs Werk eine abstrakte Erfahrung von Ort und Zeit dar, eine Poetik der postmodernen Stadt. Durch die vom Künstler gewählte Technik – Bögen farbigen Fotopapiers werden direkt belichtet, sodass großformatige Papiernegative entstehen – ist jede Fotografie ein Unikat, ein einzigartiges Kunstwerk. Gemeinsam bilden sie eine kontemplative Aufzeichnung von Reflexionen über die Stadt in den letzten zehn Jahren: „Berliner Passagen“.

Über den Künstler:

Maciej Markowicz (geb. 1981 in Nowy Sącz) hat die Technik der Camera Obscura durch die Kombination mit selbstgebauten mobilen Fahrzeugen modernisiert. Ausgehend von den Grundkomponenten der Fotografie – Licht und lichtempfindliches Material – fotografiert Markowicz aus dem Inneren seines Vans oder Kahns. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich in den öffentlichen Sammlungen des Französischen Museums für Fotografie und der Kunstsammlung des Bundestags sowie in zahlreichen Privatsammlungen in den Vereinigten Staaten, Großbritannien und anderen europäischen Ländern.

Maciej Markowicz’s first comprehensive solo exhibition in Berlin is a record of his contemplative reflection on the city created using a unique technique: the moving Camera Obscura. Born in southern Poland, the artist associated with Berlin for the past six years, modernized the Camera Obscura technique in his artistic practice, using mobile vehicles with a built-in camera that he created himself. Based on the basic principles of photography: light and photosensitive material, Markowicz makes photographs from inside his van or barge. During a series of events accompanying the exhibition, it will be possible to participate in the artistic process inside a barge while cruising down the Spree.

In Markowicz’s work, paper negatives represent an abstract experience of place and time, the poetics of the postmodern city. Due to the nature of the artist’s creative process – exposure made directly on a sheet of color photographic paper, resulting in large-format paper negatives – each photograph is one of a kind and a unique work of art. It is a contemplative record of reflections on the city from the last six years: „Berlin Passages“.

About the Artist:

Maciej Markowicz (born in Nowy Sącz in 1981) studied photography in London and New York. His works are included in the public collections of the French Museum of Photography and the German Art Collection of the Bundestag, and in many private collections in the United States, Great Britain and Europe. Maciej Markowicz lives and works in Berlin.
