Plastic artist Ania SOLIMAN in residence

For three months, from 31 January until 19 April 2015Ania SOLIMAN, a plastic artist of Polish origin, will be in residence at M_KHA, Antwerp’s Museum of Contemporary Art, as part of the programme LODGERS, whose goal is to invite a selection of the most imaginative artistic initiatives to inhabit the exhibition space on the 6th floor of M_HKA. MER Paper Kunsthalle, a small factory which produces art books, has the honour of inaugurating the cycle.
With this in mind, the organisers have extended an invitation to Ania SOLIMAN to take part in the programme. Over the three month period, she will produce a book and the finished product will be published.
The public will not be excluded from this spirit of dynamism, as anyone may come and visit the artist in her residence totally free of charge and watch as her work comes to life.

Here is a description of the LODGERS programme by the commissioner, Nav HAQ : “The LODGERS programme invites some of the most imaginative artistic initiatives to come and occupy the 6th floor exhibition spaces at M HKA. It offers a unique opportunity for public interface, to organisations and initiatives who focus specifically on producing and commissioning, and who do not have their own display space. These LODGERS might be publishers, commissioning agencies, research initiatives, labels, collectives, discussion platforms and other initiatives experimenting with artistic practice who would be interested to live, work and perform in Antwerp.”
In collaboration with AIR Antwerpen, the artists’ residence programme for the city of Antwerp (commissioner: Alan QUIREYNS).

Ania SOLIMAN has a research-based practice and works with different types of drawing (like the trace/ the design/the diagram/ the expressive mark), videos, text and installation. Her most recent project involved objects found in anthropology collections, with the structure of the collection itself as a topic of investigation. She attended Harvard and Columbia Universities as well as the Whitney Independent Study program. Her work was exhibited in the 2010 Whitney Biennial, at Artists Space in New York, and in solo shows at the Drawing Center (NY) and at the Museum of Culture in Basel.
