This year, Poland is marking the 1050th anniversary of its baptism. This anniversary does not just commemorate the historical event which took place in 966 and which marked the beginning of the history of the Catholic Church on Polish soil and consequently, the birth of the Polish State. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the consequences of this fact for modern and future times.
The key ceremonies will take place on 14 April in Gniezno, site of the first Polish archbishopric, and on 15 and 16 April in Poznan. On the 16 April, Poznan’s Inea stadium will host an Anniversary Liturgical Ceremony entitled ‘Where there is baptism, there is hope’. One of the major events taking place to mark the anniversary of the Baptism of Poland will be the pilgrimage made by Pope Francis to Poland (from 28 until 31 July) as part of the World Youth Days (26-31 July).
This anniversary is not uniquely religious: there are a large number of academic conferences, exhibitions, concerts and educational activities taking place alongside the religious events.
