The documentary and animated film festival DOK Leipzig is one of the many cinema festivals which are held each year in Germany. The Goethe Institute is relocating to Brussels in order to show the cream of the crop from the festival programme and the event is entitled GERMAN FILM FESTIVALS ON TOUR. It is as part of this initiative that the winner of the 2015 competition at the DOK Leipzig festival will be screened: Bracia (Brothers), from Polish director Wojciech STAROŃ. The screening will take place on 2 June at Bozarin the presence of the director and his producer. After the screening, they will be talking to Lars MEYER, who is in charge of programming for DOK Leipzig, and Alfons KUŁAKOWSKI – one of the main figures of the movie – will also be present and will be exhibiting some of his works at BOZAR.

BRACIA (PL, 2015, 68 min)
This film tells the story of two brothers, Alfons and Mieczysław KUŁAKOWSKI, who are as bound by their family ties as they are by fate: deported to Siberia, escapees from the gulag and residents of Kazakhstan, Alfons the painter and Mieczysław the catrographer have always lived together; after travelling from one end of the USSR to the other, they return to a capitalist Poland which they don’t really know and set up home in a small village in the north of the country. One man paints, the other supports him; one man fights against old age, whilst the other gives in to it; one man is a pragmatist, the other a dreamer. They are so different and yet so similar. It is precisely this that director Wojciech STAROŃ has captured so perfectly (he filmed the two brothers over a seven-year period). In order to explore the lives of his two heroes, he also didn’t hesitate to add archive footage filmed years ago by Mieczysław.
