When Kristallnacht breaks out across Germany in 1938, the shop belonging to the father of Sally Perel, a young Jewish man, is pillaged by the nazis and his sister is murdered. The family flees to Poland. When the Germans invade the country, Sally and her older brother once again flee to the east, heading this time for the USSR. Separated by accident, Sally ends up in an orphanage. It is there that he allows himself to be won over by the communist ideology and becomes a member of the Komsomols, Soviet pioneers. When the Germans break the German-Soviet pact two years later, Sally finds himself on the move again. Captured, Sally passes himself off as an Aryan and, under the name of Joseph Peters, is recruited against his will into the Hitler Youth.
