Double bill on the Polish Radio Experimental Studio – PRES at STUK

Double bill on the Polish Radio Experimental Studio – PRES: “SZUM” [noise] by Katharina Smets, Ingrid Leonard, Inne Eysermans / The Space Between & “Pole Reports from Space” by Claire Croizé, Etienne Guilloteau / ECCE.

The Polish Radio Experimental Studio – PRES was an iconic experimental music studio in Warsaw established in 1957 and operated until 2004. It was one of the few electronic music studios operating behind the Iron Curtain. Composers such as Krzysztof PendereckiElżbieta Sikora, Eugeniusz Rudnik, and Krzysztof Knittel created in the studio.

STUK honours PRES with a double bill of dance, image and sound. Audio counter Katharina Smets, video artist Ingrid Leonard and sound artist Inne Eysermans out to create a transmedial performance inspired by the story of the PRES with particular reference to the enigmatic spirit of the studio: engineer and composer Eugeniusz Rudnik. This new creation, titled SZUM [Noise], is premiered in STUK.

Choreographers Claire Croizé and Etienne Guilloteau created the dance performance Pole Reports from Space, combining the sound of PRES with the flavor of the 80s Soviet science fiction. Two Polish dancers, Krystyna Lama Szydłowska and Justyna Kalbarczyk enter a futuristic dreamscape inspired by this musical heritage.

Like cosmonauts whirling through space, or perhaps like ghosts on an opaque wall, they try desperately to communicate. Pole Reports from Space is en exercise in encoding and decoding their message, and en invitation for the audience to join, – a vision of the future as seen from the past, at one utopian and nostalgic.
