Paintings of artists of the pre-war Kraków Group combine interest in the elements of everyday life with the analysis of the formal structure of a creation. It tends to balance the uniform composition structure with thematic references to monotonous flows of pedestrians in the traffic, city entertainment, politic manifestations, strikes, or police oppression.
A city in the eyes of Sasza Blonder, Leopold Lewicki or Stanisław Osostowicz is a space of consumption and at the same time a scene of political battles. The lecture will be an opportunity to match the works of these artists against the social and historical background of the 1930s in Poland, the time of flourishing of popular culture and intensification of political tensions.
