EDUCATIONAL CYCLE “POLES IN KYIV”
Kyiv 16 / 23 / 24 / 30.09.2018
National Museum of Ukrainian History | Volodymyrska st., 2
The first mentions of Poles in Kyiv date back to 11th-12th centuries, which is quite logical considering the extent of ethnic and cultural closeness of Poles and Ukrainians and the geographical proximity of both countries. Fates of Ukrainian and Polish peoples are intertwined in the topography of Kyiv streets. Streets that protected their children in tumultuous moments of history regardless of their origin or nationality. This incredible spirit of the city was favourable to creative activities. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Polish community of Kyiv, although not very numerous, created one of the strongest centers of Polish identity. Due to the activities of Kievan Poles, an important center of national life emerged in the city. At the time various Polish political, charitable, educational, cultural, sport and youth organizations worked in Kyiv, Polish magazines and newspapers were published and Polish theaters performed. This is the period that will be covered in the lectures of our educational cycle “Poles in Kyiv”.
