Teodor KORWIN-SZYMANOWSKI, pioneer of the notion of a united Europe

The College of Europe in Bruges is paying homage to the mind of Teodor KORWIN-SZYMANOWSKI (1846-1901), a great pioneer of the notion of a united Europe and author of the book ‘L’avenir économique, social et politique en Europe’ (‘The Future of Europe in Economic, Political and Social Terms’), which was published in Paris in 1885, by holding a conference held by Radosław Paweł ŻURAWSKI vel GRAJEWSKI of the University of Łódź, the author of the afterword of the bilingual French-Polish reprint of the book by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the “Biblioteka jedności europejskiej” (Bibliothèque de l’unité européenne) series in 2016.
Conference held in English.

+++ Practical information

In his afterword, Radosław Paweł ŻURAWSKI vel GRAJEWSKI sums up the thinking of Teodor Korwin-Szymanowski as follows: “The programme of European integration, as espoused by Teodor Korwin-Szymanowski, which is based on an economic and financial community of the Old Continent, has several original features. First of all, it refers to the economic foundations of society, because it is there that the author sees at once the lever and the mechanism of proposed change and the sphere within which these changes need to be made. The first goal which these reforms have in their sights is guaranteeing prosperity and opening up to European countries the vast possibilities for economic development; according to his vision, it is close economic cooperation between these countries which will bring, almost automatically, other benefits, including those of a political nature, such as international cooperation and peace.”
