When one talks about the Polish avant-garde, it is worth remembering that its borders are marked, on the one hand, by the very different philosophies of representation of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and Władysław Strzemiński that were formulated immediately after the declaration of independence in 1918, and, on the other hand, by metaphysics of art of Tadeusz Kantor that grew in the shadow of the Theatre of Death until 1990s.
The main issues brought up during the lecture will be: what are the fundamental elements of the avant-garde? What are problematic and historic limitations of the avant-garde of the 20th century?
