Professor Andrzej Żbikowski at the scientific conference “Jews in the Ethnic Mosaic of the Ukrainian Land”

Andrzej Żbikowski is a Polish historian, professor of East European Studies of the Warsaw University, works in the European History Institute where he heads the department of the Research of the Contemporary History of Polish Jews. He is the author of the book “Karski (a story of life of Jan Karski in the context of the Polish Underground Government in 1939-1945 )” and co-author of the “Atlas of Polish Jews” and “Evictions, Banishments and Getaways of 1939-1945. Atlas of Polish Lands”.

The Seym of the Republic of Poland pronounced that 2014 would be the Year of Jan Karski (1897–1964), the emissary of the underground Polish government during the World War II. While gathering information for his reports in the West, Karski managed to get into the Warsaw ghetto twice and into the sorting camp in the town of Izbica Lubelska, from which Jews were taken to death camps. He told the scary stories about what he had seen to numerous European and American politicians, journalists, and artists. However his appeals brought no results. The West did not react because they did not believe. Perhaps, as Jan Karski stressed, it was caused by their own political interests.
