156th anniv. of the January Uprising 1863 🗺

Concert

On the occasion of the 156th anniversary of the January Uprising of 1863*, a celebratory concert will take place in the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theater for Youth and Children. The orchestra of the theater will perform pieces of Frédéric Chopin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Edward Elgar conducted by world-famous Ukrainian conductor Oleksii Baklan. The event is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine, the Polish Institute in Kyiv and the International Society of Polish Entrepreneurs in Ukraine.

An exhibition of graphic works of Artur Grottger will be held in the lobby of the theater. The artist of the January Uprising. This is how people called Artur Grottger (1837—-1867) who was born in Ottyniowice in Podolia. The Polish painter, illustrator and graphic artist was one of prominent exponents of Polish romanticism and became known first of all due to the series of works on the theme of the January Uprising of 1863-1864.

* The January Uprising (1863–64) was an insurrection of Poles against the Russian Empire, which was instigated principally in the lands of the Kingdom of Poland, Lithuania, and partly Belarus and Right Bank Ukraine. The uprising was caused by the desire of the nationally conscious part of the Polish society to obtain independence and restore the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The rise of the Polish national movement was facilitated by the success of liberation and unification of Italy, growth of democratic forces in European countries, creation and activity of secret radical democratic organizations in Russia. By September 1864 the uprising was put down, only few groups managed to hold until the beginning of 1865.
