Our fifth webinar in the series Polish Talk - Mondays with JHI will be dedicated to Rachel Auerbach, one of the three surviving members of the Oyneg Shabes group

Our fifth webinar in the series Polish Talk – Mondays with JHI on March 8th at 19:00 – The International Women Day – will be dedicated to Rachel Auerbach

Rachel Auerbach was a Yiddish-Polish writer, essayist, historian, Holocaust scholar, and Holocaust survivor.

She was one of the three surviving members of the Oyneg Shabes group in the Warsaw ghetto and the first Director of the Department for Collection of Witness Testimonies

at Yad Vashem Institute.

The discussion will be led by Dr. Karolina Szymaniak, the author of the book “Pisma z getta warszawskiego” (“Writings from the Warsaw Ghetto”).

Dr. Karolina Szymaniak is a Research Fellow at the Jewish Historical Institute and assistant professor at the Department of Jewish Studies in Wroclaw.

For her work on Rachel Auerbach‘s ghetto writings, she received the 2016 Polityka History Award.

Her research interests range across modern Yiddish literature, Polish-Jewish cultural relations, and translation studies.

In addition to having taught Yiddish language and culture throughout Poland and Europe, she has also served as a consultant for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Museum of

Modern Art in Łódz and other cultural insitutions.

She was one of the translators of the full edition of the Ringelblum Archive into Polish.

 

The event will be moderated by Mr. Noam Leibman (Moreshet).

 

The event is organized by the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv, The Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute and Moreshet – Mordechai Anielewicz Memorial Education & Research center. 

The 45 minutes webinar will be followed by an hour of questions of the participants.

Polish film at the Jerusalem Jewish Film

The film “Cywia and Rachel” by Rafaël Lewandowski, which explores the lives of Rachel Auerbach and Cywia Lubetkin and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, will participate this year in the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival. The festival will focus on Jewish identity and culture and will present dozens of films and special events during the Hanukkah holiday.
