Kapela Maliszów – Folk aus Polen

Fr 06.03.2015 – Sa 07.03.2015 Kleiner Sendesaal des WDR Köln und Brotfabrik Bonn

Kapela Maliszów –  Familienensemble aus Südpolen, 2. Preisträger beim Festival und Wettbewerb „Nowa Tradycja“ von Polskie Radio.

A family band started and led by multi-instrumentalist Jan Mailsz. The band is inspired by traditional music of people living not only in Carpathian Mountains, but also at Balkan Peninsula ( Romania, Serbia, Macedonia). Recently the band has been working on traditional music from the place they live – Beskid Niski and Pogorze. Folk songs and dance music from Gorlice county is traditionally played with a violin, a basolia ( a folk instrument similar to a cello) and a drum in, an archaic way with a great amount of freedom, joy and improvisation, not only reconstruction of old melodies.
The violin owned by the band leader used to belong to his father Jozef, who in the thirties of the 20th century played at wedding parties. Jan also inherited a drum made by his father in the fifties. The drum is still used by the band.
They call this music “Father’s notes”. In the past Jan Malisz used to play for many years in in a few local folk bands ( e.g. Pogorzanie from Gorlice) and then he learned a lot of melodies from his older colleagues.

In 2014 the band was awarded with the second prize at folk festival New Tradition and a special prize The Gold Violin for Kacper Malisz, the violin player.
In 2013 the band got the first prize and the audience award in the competition Old Tradition at folk festival Mazurkas of the World in Warsaw, and also the first prize at Folk Singers and Bands Festival ( Festiwal Spiewakow i Kapel) in Kazimierz. They also received Carpathians Player ( Karpacki Grajek) – the main award at Carpathians Folk Festiwal (Festiwal Folkloru Karpat) in Trzcinica. Kacper Malisz was awarded with a special prize for interesting version of regional music and his playing techniques at the folk festival Sabałowe Bajanie in Bukowina Tatrzańska .
The band played at many festivals: Mazurkas of the World in Warsaw, Flugery Lwowa in Lviv ( Ukraine), Karpaty OFF-er in Nowy Sacz, Festival Cross Culture in Warsaw. They also had concerts and played dance music in many places (e.g. Tyndyryndy Club in Warsaw, in Lublin and Kazimierz) and during different events ( parties and weddings).
