“POEMS IN THE UNDERGROUND”

The main goal of the “Poems in the underground” project is popularization of the modern poetry by means of its presentation in the capital underground railway (the most popular mode of transport) and in the city space. It will be the fourth campaign of such kind; the previous three presentations of European poetry took place in Warsaw in 2008-2010. In 2011 in connection with Polish Presidency of the EU Council modern Polish poets and their poems will visit not just Warsaw but also other 8 cities beyond Polish borders: London, Paris, Madrid, Kyiv, Beijing, Tokyo, Brussels and Luxembourg.

The core of the project is exhibition in the capital underground railway of 30 poems written by 30 modern Polish poets ranging from such classics as Czesław Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska, Tadeusz Różewicz, Zbigniew Herbert, to talented youngsters Jacek Dehnel, Krzysztof Siwczyk and others. Exhibitions in the underground will be accompanied by meetings with authors, haiku contest, festival of performing poets Spoke’N’Word on Tour, seminars on preparation for slam contests and advertising campaign. Opening of the project in Kyiv will take place on 26 September in the “Ye” bookshop (Lysenko str. 3) with participation of the poets Wojciech Bonowicz, Ryszard Krynicki and Marzanna Kielar. The festival Spoke’N’Word on Tour is planned on 8 October.
