Anubis by Joanna Karpowicz

The jackal-headed god in new arrangements

Joanna Karpowicz puts Anubis, a god associated with mummification and the afterlife in ancient Egyptian religion, in a whole new context by situating him against the background of other cultures. He is a receptionist in a hotel, waiting for a late night guest to come. He is watching a movie, eating popcorn. His figure seems to be an outsider waiting to participate in each painting’s story.

Joanna Karpowicz, born 1976 in Krakow, likes to experiment with tools, textures and techniques. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and regularly publishes her own comics. She has exhibited her paintings in several Polish  galleries.
