In Honour of the Artist

A Polish-English collection of essays.

Polish-English collection of essays, poems and interviews, appearing to coincide with All Saints Day, is devoted to poets and artist who passed away but who live on in the memories of those who stay, in their works and in the inspiration they offered to the next generations. The pieces in this collection are candles lit to bring out to light the once towering figures of, among other, Czesław Miłosz, Zbigniew Herbert, Jan Lechoń, Andrzej Wajda, Yevgeny Evtushenko or Salvador Dali. The authors recall their encounters with them, sometimes fleeting, but ones which remained etched forever in the memory, propose reading and rereading of their poems, pictures, films, or pay homage to the great dead with their own verse. Culture like religion transgresses the limits of individual life, creating a space beyond time, in which to meet, engage in a dialogue and, to quote T.S. Eliot, “to grow a contemporary culture out of the old roots”. The Nobel prizewinning Polish poet Wisława Szymborska once wrote that “The immortality of the dead lasts so long as we pay them in memory”. And it is with this kind of tribute that the Polish and English writers in the present volume thank their great predecessors.
