Director Marek Śledziewski presents his London debut with the Polish Opera in London for a new take on Moniuszko’s masterpiece featuring an international cast of singers, actors and dancers and stage design transporting us from 1802 revolutionary Haiti to the Haunted Manor of Kalinowie in Poland.

Rafał Bartmiński stars in the role of Stefan. Also featuring Olga Maroszek of Teatr Wielki in Łódz.

Moniuszko’s Straszny Dwor was composed at a time when Poland was oppressed by the Russian Czarist rulers.

Sent to Haiti to crush the Slave Rebellion for Napoleon and his French Empire a garrison of soldiers exiled from their native Poland see the immorality in their mission and change sides to help the Haitians resulting in the first ever successful Slave revolt in history 1900 years after Spartacus’s failure against the Roman Empire.

The Opera is conducted by Stephen Ellery.

The Haunted Manor is supported by the Polish Cultural Institute in London.

Highlights include Stefan’s aria “Cisza dokoła” and the Mazur for dancers and chorus.
