Due to start in the New Year, Auteurs of Polish Cinema will be an online course, running across ten 2hr sessions. This journey through the works of 10 iconic directors is designed to be an exciting entry point to one of Europe’s most influential and diverse national cinemas. The introductory course looks at Poland’s canonical post-war filmmakers and established contemporary voices. As Polish films often require some guidance, the discussions will also examine wider socio-cultural background of the works in focus.

Each week of the course will focus on one Polish director from the post-war era to the present, taking in a variety of genres and styles from both art-house and popular films. Clip-based discussions in class will also be an opportunity to explore a range of topics linked with the socio-cultural and political history of the country. Each iteration of the course features a new line-up of directors.

Kieslowski in 1994

The in-person course Director Focus: Krzysztof Kieslowski will take place on campus in Edinburgh and will consist of 5 evening classes.

From his early films for Polish television to European art house fame, Kieslowski’s cinema explores many ideas about modern society. Kieslowski has created singular cinematic experiences on both an aesthetic and intellectual level that have earned him his place among the great masters of modernEuropean cinema.

The course is an introduction to the cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski, from his 1960s Polish short documentaries to the acclaimed Three Colours trilogy produced in France. Students explore a range of diverse examples from Kieslowski’s works, which form a basis for investigations of the ideological and moral constraints placed on the individual, and the power of love and human identity. Group discussions centre around recurring formal and narrative techniques used by the Polish director.
