From the directors of Oscar-nominated Loving Vincent (DK Welchman, Hugh Welchman) comes another stunning hand-painted animation, The Peasants (Chłopi), based on a Nobel prize-winning novel by Władysław Reymont. Poland’s entry for Best International Feature and Best Original Score at the Oscars, the film portrays the tragic story of a peasant girl, Jagna, forced to marry a much older, wealthy farmer, Boryna, despite her love for his son, Antek. With time, Jagna becomes the object of envy and hate of the villagers and has to fight to preserve her independence.

Due to hit cinemas in Birmingham, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Truro, Portsmouth and many, many more, there is bound to be a screening near you!

The Peasants achieves a whole new level of dynamism — this time the frame itself moves, sometimes with a virtuosity you’d expect from only CGI animation, and at a moment like Jagna and Antek’s tryst, the camera feels like a participant, not a voyeur. There’s real intimacy here.” – IndieWire

“At once florid and austere, inventive and realistic, and an altogether enlightening recreation of a bygone time and place.” – The Daily Beast

“The extraordinary novelty of this technique and the undeniably unique visual look of these films can’t help but designate them as must-see” – The Playlist
