From June to September 2024, London's Phoenix Cinema will host a series of monthly film screenings, presenting rare gems from Central and Eastern European cinema.

June – September, Phoenix Cinema, East Finchley, London

Get ready for ‘Second Run Sundays’ – a series of World Cinema classics

Second Run are dedicated to bringing world cinema to new audiences. Their catalogue is packed with rare gems from Central and Eastern European cinema and they are excited to present a selection of these films, with an introduction, on the big screen.

The season will begin on 9th June with Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos’ THE SHOP ON THE HIGH STREET (Obchod na korze, 1965). This Oscar®-winning drama is one of the cornerstones of Czechoslovak cinema, and a tragi-comic tale of the complexities of friendship and betrayal during wartime.

Next, on 7th July, is Zoltán Fábri’s beloved Hungarian classic MERRY-GO-ROUND (Körhinta, 1955). A dazzling love story set against the turbulent changes in society in 1950s rural Hungary, and the debut feature of the late, great Hungarian star Mari Törőcsik. Presented from a new 4K restoration.

On 4th August, we will be screening Ryszard Bugajski’s powerful INTERROGATION (Przesłuchanie, 1982). Banned and only finally released after the fall of Communism in Poland, it features a towering, award-winning performance by Krystyna Janda. Presented from a new 2K restoration.

On 1st September, Jindřich Polák’s pioneering Czech sci-fi epic IKARIE XB-1 (1963), will be screened. A pronounced influence on both Star Trek and Kubrick’s 2001 – and on countless other sci-fi films and TV shows that followed. A seminal work of fantasy cinema, presented here from a new 4K restoration.
