Dundee Fringe returns for its fifth edition this September, bringing bold, boundary-pushing art to pop-up venues across the city from 12–21 September 2025.

Among its compelling theatrical offerings is Whispers by Patrycja Zając – a hauntingly atmospheric performance that reverberates with both historical weight and contemporary relevance.

Set against the dark, fog-drenched streets of Victorian London, Whispers invites audiences into a solemn world shaped by memory, trauma, and resilience. Crafted entirely from historical source material, the show acts as a reckoning with the brutal forces of patriarchy that defined 19th-century England—a time when the fight for women’s legal and social emancipation began to take shape.

Drawing stylistic inspiration from the gothic tones of Penny Dreadfuls, Whispers channels a haunting mood, stirring both curiosity and unease. Yet beneath its chilling exterior lies a deeply resonant message: that voices once silenced are stronger than ever, echoing through time with renewed urgency.

Why You Should See It:

  • Historically Grounded & Thematically Rich
Using authentic historical sources, the piece offers an immersive, research-rooted journey into the struggles and silences of Victorian women. It strikes a powerful balance between period drama and contemporary commentary – a potent reminder that the fight for gender equality is far from over.
  • Atmospheric Gothic Storytelling
With echoes of Penny Dreadfuls, Whispers immerses viewers in a Victorian world that’s eerie, evocative, and emotionally resonant. Gothic elements become vehicles of both fear and empathy, enhancing the story’s emotional depth.
  • Compact Yet Impactful
At just 60 minutes, this tight, focused performance ensures every moment lands with purpose – making it a perfect late-evening entry in the festival schedule.
