A series of film and literature events celebrating the great Polish-British writer.

From 1–11 November, join us at Ciné Lumière for a curated selection of film adaptations that bring Conrad’s complex tales to life – each screening introduced by an expert to explore how filmmakers interpret his work:

Sabotage – Alfred Hitchcock, 1936 (35mm)
Sabotage updates Joseph Conrad’s classic novel The Secret Agent for the shadowy political intrigues of 1930s London.

Gabrielle – Patrice Chéreau, 2005 (35mm)
Patrice Chéreau adaptation of The Return weaves the intense tale of a wealthy couple whose marriage is turned upside down.

Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut – Francis Ford Coppola, 1979
Francis Ford Coppola’s epic, which uses Conrad’s 1899 novella Heart of Darkness as the basis for a hallucinatory fantasia on the Vietnam War.

Almayer’s Folly – Chantal Akerman, 2011
Akerman turns to Conrad’s lesser-known first novel for her last fiction film, a searing tale of a fortune seeker stranded in Malaysia.
