FOCUS ON POLAND @ the Edinburgh International Festival

The season honours Scotland’s long-standing connection with Poland and showcases the extraordinary richness of Polish culture, both past and present.

The NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra – the resident orchestra of the National Forum of Music, Wrocław – comes to the International Festival as the flagship ensemble of Focus on Poland. This string orchestra has been developing its sound for almost 40 years, now led by British violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky.

Focus on Poland features seven concerts celebrating Polish culture. We showcase outstanding Polish artists – the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra,  Piotr AnderszewskiVOŁOSI, and the Wrocław Baroque Ensemble – alongside performances of iconic Polish repertoire, played by the award-winning violinist Bomsori Kim, and the exceptional pianist Ryan Wang.

In this concert, Bizet’s Carmen Suite, The NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra perform a deeply emotive programme, featuring works by Grażyna Bacewicz, Richard Strauss and Wojciech Kilar. George Bizet’s opera Carmen closes their performance, scored for Rodion Shchedrin’s imaginative arrangement.  

The NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, resident at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, takes centre stage as the flagship ensemble of our Focus on Poland series during their International Festival Residency. For nearly 40 years, this string orchestra has honed their distinctive sound under the leadership of exceptional violinist-directors. Originally rooted in classical and Baroque repertoire, the NFM later embraced 20th-century works. Since 2023, British violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky has been leading the charge.

Bomsori Kim & Thomas Hoppejoin in a stunning recital celebrating Poland’s rich musical heritage. Bomsori Kim is internationally recognised as one of the most dynamic and exciting violinists of today. The programme includes works by Karol Szymanawski, Henryk Wieniawski, and by Grażyna Bacewicz. Known as the first lady of Polish music, Bacewicz brought a fiercely individual style to a range of distinctive works for her instrument: the violin.
