Warsaw Calling Exhibition at Clapham Library

An exhibition telling the dramatic, heroic and tragic story of the Warsaw Uprising. Organised by the Polish Underground Movement Study Trust with academic partners, the display also explores the significant but lesser-known British links to the uprising.

3rd -30th November, FREE, Clapham Library, Mary Seacole Centre, 91 Clapham High Street SW4 7DB

The Warsaw Uprising lasted from 1st August to 2nd October 1944 and was the greatest and bloodiest military operation undertaken by any resistance movement in the Second World War. For two months, the superior Nazi forces were held in check by the Polish underground army, the Armia Krajowa (Home Army), many of whom were just teenagers.

For two months in the summer of 1944, the Polish resistance movement did battle against superior Nazi forces, while the Soviet Red Army stood by across the river Vistula. The cost was an estimated 200,000 lives and destruction of 80% of the city.

Opened last year to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising and shown at Bush House as well as the Polish Social and Cultural Organisation, the exhibition has now partnered with Clapham Library. It highlights the courage and resilience of the Polish resistance against Nazi occupation, focusing on the personal stories of fighters and civilians. Organised by the Polish Underground Movement Study Trust with academic partners, the display also explores the significant but lesser-known British links to the uprising.
