Halka by Stanisław Moniuszko performed by The Polish Opera in London

A new take on Stanisław Moniuszko's great romantic tragedy and pionering nationalist masterpiece set in a Poland controlled by tsarist Russia, that made Moniuszko a household name in Poland.

29 – 30 October, POSK Theatre, Hammersmith

A new take on the great romantic tragedy ‘Halka’, by one of Poland’s most distinguished composers Stanisław Moniuszko, performed by the Polish Opera in London.

Set in a Poland controlled by Tsarist Russia, when the Polish language itself was banned and Poland existed under the oppressive rule of Russia and anyone who dared protest was likely sent to Siberia, an innocent mountain village girl is taken advantage of by a an aristocrat who then marries a woman of his social rank leaving the peasant girl pregnant and heartbroken.

The play’s setting makes the creation of Moniuszko’s nationalist masterpiece even more astounding with its vibrant Polish national rythms and folkloric arias sung in the Polish language.

Having explored a near complete cycle of Moniuszko’s operas during a 10 year period the Polish Opera in London returns to the stage with electrifying dances and enchanting slavic melodies for a new take on the pionering masterpiece that made the Moniuszko a household name in Poland.

Directed by Jarosław Zawartko, Conducted by Stephen Ellery, with a UK debut performance by Greek-Polish star Karina Trepanazu Skrzeszewska.
