‘In Short, Europe: Best of Best’ – European Short Film Festival

Receiving a 4 star review from The Guardian, the 6th European Short Film Festival, held this year in Glasgow and London presents a selection of inspiring, award-winning short films from 28 European countries, including Polish short 'Dead Marriage'.

20 – 21 April, Glasgow Film Theatre

26 – 28 April, Ciné Lumière, French Institute

EUNIC London, in collaboration with the EU Delegation to the UK and the Glasgow Film Festival, confirms the 6th edition of In Short, Europe.

The Festival is a diverse and exciting celebration of European short filmmaking and is going from strength to strength with each edition.

This year, under the title ‘Best of Best’, is no exception with all films being award winning. The 28 films come from across Europe from Ukraine, through Poland, to Scotland taking in countries as varied as the Faroe Islands, Flanders and Belgium’s Wallonia Brussels.

‘In Short, Europe: Best of Best’ festival features five different strands of short films, all divided according to their themes:

  • Smile You’re On Camera
  • Hard Decisions
  • People on the Precipice
  • Psychodrama
  • Kids Animation: Why’s the Sky Blue?

Polish short film, Dead Marriage directed by Michał Toczek, is part of Strand 3 – People on the Precipice. This section of the festival is a collection of narrative and documentary short movies that turns its eye to edges and boundaries and the outliers who live beyond them. The films in this programme explore the ways in which our political realities determine what kind of outsider we are.

Dead Marriage (Poland, 2022, fiction, 19 mins) itself talks about isolation and connection. These themes collide in a movie which follows two unlikely outsiders. After two extras who play corpses on film sets connect during a scene, a tender relationship forms as more is revealed between them.

EUNIC London (European Union National Institutes for Culture) is the network of the cultural institutes and embassies from the member states of the EU in London. It is a proud initiator, organizer and supporter of creative projects highlighting Europe’s fantastic diversity in arts, culture and language.

The Delegation of the European Union to the UK engages with His Majesty’s Government, political actors, academia, business, the media, civil society, and the British public, to assist in shaping a collaborative and forward-looking new EU-UK relationship.

Glasgow Film Festival is firmly established as a key event in the UK’s cultural calendar, launched in 2005. Held annually, it presents a unique programme of feature film premieres, special events, live and interactive experiences, and an Industry Focus programme for filmmakers at every stage of their career. Previous GFF guests include Richard Gere, Alan Rickman, Saoirse Ronan, George MacKay, Jessie Buckley, Sir. Michael Palin, Josh O’Connor, Ty West, and more.
