Ania Goszczyńska (Illustrator) / Agnieszka Dąbrowska (Painter) / Agata Read (Photographer)

Three Polish-born artists contemplate the concept of liminal space, drawing inspiration from a location that went through significant transformations as well as their own experience of adapting to a new environment.

Working in very different methods, the residency will give an opportunity for creating a new body of work and experiment with the process.

Using painting, photography, prints, and experimental techniques artists will reflect on the ever-changing nature of their surroundings.

Settled in St. Leonards on Sea/Hastings for over a decade, the artists get together to collaborate creatively on this exploration of their own experience and the cultural transformation of St. Leonards.

Ania Goszczyńska

An illustrator and visual arDst. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Ania studied at the Academy of Arts there, gaining an MA in Design. However, with Dme, her focus shifted to visual art and illustration. She moved to Hastings in 2016.

Her favourite subjects are either lifestyle-related with a feminist perspective, or fantasy, fairytale, and horror. Her work has been commissioned by prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, National Theater in Warsaw, Wojciech Boguslawski Theater in Kalisz, Polish Institute in Brussels and magazines:

Wysokie Obcasy, Strange Attractor Press, BLEACH London, Bosse & Baum Gallery, Empik, VHS Hell, Kikimora, Hello Zdrowie, Reader’s Digest, and others. She has been awarded with KTR Gold Award for VISUAL ID DESIGN at the 30th Warsaw Theatre Meetings (2011 ), and the KTR Gold Award for the best ILLUSTRATION PORTFOLIO (2012).

Agnieszka Dąbrowska

A painter. Born in Krasnobrod, Poland, Agnieszka studied at the Zielona Gora Art InsDtute. Her artistic odyssey has taken her from the picturesque landscapes of Italy’s Puglia region to her current home in HasDngs, East Sussex, where she has been captivating audiences since 2004.

Her works, both exhibited in the UK and Poland, have garnered international recognition and acclaim. Shortlisted in esteemed platforms such as Aesthetica Magazine and the Osten Biennial of Drawing 2018, Dabrowska’s art has been featured in Saatchi Online. Recently, she curated her inaugural group exhibiDon, “Known and Strange Things,” at Electro Studio Project Space in St. Leonards-on-Sea.

Agnieszka’s arDsDc philosophy delves into the intricate interplay of colors, textures, and mark-making, using acrylic and oil on canvas to construct captivating narratives. Her landscapes intertwine with figurative motifs, reflecting the complex journey of human existence. Through series such as the exploration of a headless figure’s quest for identity, Dabrowska navigates the spectrum of emoDons, from dreamy surrealism to vivid expressionism.

Agata Read

An artist working with photography. Agata was born into a family with artistic traditions. In 2006, she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in interior design. Shortly after, she moved to England, where she continued her studies at the University of Sussex.
