CINÉ LUMIÈRE Presents ‘Kanał’ and ‘Europa, Europa’ as part of WWII On Screen Festival

Watch Andrzej Wajda's and Agnieszka Holland's critically acclaimed films @CINÉ LUMIÈRE later this month.

80 years after the D-Day landing, rediscover a selection of classics depicting war.

The season includes powerful dramas that still resonate today such as Agnieszka Holland’s Europa Europa, Louis Malle’s poignant Goodbye, Children, René Clément’s epic Is Paris Burning? and Roberto Rossellini’s masterpiece Rome, Open City.

Europa, Europa

Director: Agnieszka Holland

FROM SUN 30 JUN TO TUE 02 JUL

As World War II ravages Europe, Salomon (Marco Hofschneider) gets separated from his family after fleeing with them from Germany to Poland and finds himself reluctantly assuming various identities in order to hide his Jewishness, eventually masquerading as a Nazi German. Based on the real-life experiences of Salomon Perel, Europa Europa is a breathless survival story and a reminder of the horror that WWII brought to Europe.

Kanał

Director: Andrzej Wajda

FROM SUN 07 TO THU 11 JUL

During the last days of the Warsaw Uprising a ravaged band of resistance fighters retreats into the city sewers to avoid capture by the Nazis. In this pit of darkness, engulfed by filth, they desperately strive to hang onto their lives, their hopes and their sanity. Controversial for undermining a national myth of heroic sacrifice and full of haunting images, Wajda’s second feature is an unforgettable and harrowing depiction of the horrors of war, which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival.
