Katarzyna Kobylarczyk is this year’s winner of the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for her book       The Scab: Spain scratches open its wounds.

The Ryszard Kapuściński Award for Literary Reportage is the Polish international prize founded to promote this literary genre and to honor the legacy of the journalist and writer Ryszard Kapuściński.

This event also provides an opportunity to mention Kapuściński and his books that were translated into Hebrew. Kapuściński was one of the most active Polish non-fiction writers who became a household name for his description of political and social upheavals all over the world.

Kapuściński reported from war zones and covered revolutions in South America, Asia and, especially, Africa.  He also witnessed the end of colonialism.

One of his most well-known books on Africa – The Shadow of the Sun – was translated into Hebrew and published by Am-Oved Publishers House.

Imperium was another of Kapuściński’s books translated into Hebrew and it was published by the Israeli publishing house Kibbutz Meuhad in 1993.

Kapuściński witnessed combat operations, faced other dangers, survived epidemics and diseases and had face-to-face meetings with cruel dictators. He excelled at making his story-telling as realistic as possible, and touching at the same time.
