New dates for the play “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead”
The play at Tmuna Theater in Tel Aviv, directed by Yotam Gotal, continues to captivate audiences and has received rave reviews since its premiere. This stage adaptation of the Nobel Prize-winning author Olga Tokarczuk’s novel is remarkable for its intellectual, emotional, and poetic richness, free from didacticism or moralizing. The play combines reflections on human-nature relations with critiques of power structures, religion, and patriarchal social order, delivering its message through vivid, contradictory characters with subtle humor and irony.
The performance of Naomi Yoeli as the main character, Janina Duszejko, has been widely praised. Yoeli also received the “Golden Hedgehog” award for Best Actress for her role, at the ceremony honoring outstanding achievements in Israeli independent theater — one of the most prestigious events in the off-stage theater scene. Critics highlighted her multi-layered, moving performance, as well as the harmony among the rest of the cast, creating a precise and cohesive ensemble.
The stage adaptation is based on the Hebrew translation by Miriam Borenstein, praised for its accuracy and aesthetic. The premiere took place on November 23, 2024, with the production supported by the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and the Mif’al HaPais Culture and Arts Fund.
