“Irena – No Angel”, written by Lotta Grut, playwright and actress, co-founder of Romateatern and Teater Unga Roma, is inspired by the story of Irena Sendler, the Polish Righteous Among the Nations, and her conspiratorial activities to save children from the Warsaw ghetto during the German occupation. The play explores the subject of civil courage, sacrifice for others, and the willingness to help those in need. The theatre itself describes their performance as a “poetic thriller” where black humour and seriousness are mixed together. The 55-minute show is directed by Daniel Goldmann, Swedish actor, director, and playwright. The play had its premiere on Gotland in March 2020. Two experienced actors perform on stage: Mikeala Hagelberg – theatre actress, co-founder of the following theatres: 4:e teatern, Romateatern and Teater Unga Roma, and Tobias Aspelin – film, television, and theatre actor. The performance was filmed with the support of the Polish Institute in Stockholm, and the recording of the performance had its Swedish online premiere on January 29, 2021.
