Sobootka: Poems, Stories and Songs

We’re delighted to invite you to a family-friendly midsummer celebration in a truly Polish style.

Join us for a Family Picnic packed with fun rituals, performances and activities.

The programme includes art and craft workshops (like a flower wreath making), storytelling of the best and most famous Polish legends and folk tales, poetry reading by Bohdan Piasecki or Fern Flower treasure hunt.

Not to mention a photo booth, traditional bonfire, Polish cusine and free donuts by The Polish Bakery!

We will also entertain you with the performances by Alternative Strings and Shakespeare Aloud!, as well as an unmissable ‘The Song of St John’s Eve’ by Jan Kochanowski, performed by Urszula Bock of Opera Emporio.

Bringing together traditions from across the Europe and inspirations from the pagan solstice rituals of Kupala night we will celebrate midsummer in an original and extraordinary way.

the rituals may have changed over the centuries but the Polish midsummer celebration is still a time for people to gather and enjoy the warmth of the season with family and friends.

‘Sobootka’ is organised in colaboration with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust as a part of the annual Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival .

Polish Fashion Stories: Unexpected Encounter – Batik

The earliest known examples of Polish batiks appeared around 1903 at an exhibition in Kraków, when the artist Jan Bukowski presented furniture upholstered in textiles decorated with what was called then “a manner of Easter eggs” - it was before the term batik had even entered the Polish language. From this point, other Kraków artists began to further explore the technique and its possibilities.
