19th KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival Announces 2021 Online Programme

KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival returns to your television, tablet and computer screens this May for your annual dose of Poland’s diverse film culture.

After a year of dampened cinematic experiences, we are pleased to bring the online KINOTEKA 2021 to all of our viewers across the whole of the UK. Once again, we have teamed up with some of the country’s leading cultural institutions (BFI, ICA, POSK Cinema, Riverside Studios, Theatre Times, Second Run and Channel 4’s Walter Presents) to deliver an exciting programme that celebrates Polish directing and acting in all its diversity – in film, theatre and television.

As ever, we are bringing the latest in contemporary Polish film to your screens, with two of the past year’s most idiosyncratic releases bookending the festival. As Polish television grows from strength-to-strength, we are delighted to present two recent breakout productions from Poland, never before broadcasted in the UK. This year’s festival provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the sheer richness of modern Polish cinema. Our 20th-century Undiscovered Masters strand spotlights five lesser-seen films from some of Poland’s most iconic directors, while our 21st-century Modern Polish Cinema strand pulls together the best in the past 20 years of Polish documentary and fiction. We look forward to sharing for the first time within Kinoteka programme performances recorded live on theatre stages. And who could forget that 2021 marks 80 years since the birth of the great Polish auteur Krzysztof Kieślowski? To commemorate the life and legacy of the influential director, we have curated a thought-provoking selection of his documentary and television work.

Altogether, KINOTEKA 2021 is set to bring an eclectic programme of Polish directing and acting – straight to your living rooms.

We invite you all to find a comfy spot at home, sit back, relax and enjoy the best of Polish cinema and culture.

Polish Fashion Stories: Unexpected Encounter – Batik

The earliest known examples of Polish batiks appeared around 1903 at an exhibition in Kraków, when the artist Jan Bukowski presented furniture upholstered in textiles decorated with what was called then “a manner of Easter eggs” - it was before the term batik had even entered the Polish language. From this point, other Kraków artists began to further explore the technique and its possibilities.
