Young Poland and the Arts and Crafts Movement: A New Perspective

At the London Festival of Architecture 2021.

As part of the international research and exhibition project Young Poland: An Arts and Crafts Movement, 1890-1918, the William Morris Gallery and the National Musem in Krakow has teamed up with the Polish Cultural Institute to present a series of mini-talks about the parallels between the British and Polish Arts and Crafts Movements with respect to architecture and interior design.

Highlights will include an overview of key London and Zakopane buildings with special reference to Philip Webb, Richard Norman Shaw, Stanislaw Witkiewicz, as well as a case study of Karol Klosowski’s artist’s studio house at Silent Villa and the current renovation project of historic buildings belonging to the Tatra Museum in Zakopane as well as insights about the reception of British design in Poland at the turn of the 19th century.

Talks will be presented by the Young Poland Project Curators – Julia Griffin, Prof. Andrzej Szczerski and Roisin Inglesby, Director of the Tatra Museum – Anna Wende-Surmiak and a distinguished British historian, dr Nick Tromans. The event will be chaired by dr Jeremy Melvin, curator World Architecture Festival and visiting professor at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.
