Essex Book Festival – Polish writers in residence, Maciej Hen and Wioletta Greg

Two Polish writers join the Essex Writers House for a residency during the Essex Book Festival in June.

5th – 30th June 2023, Metal, Chalkwell Hall, Chalkwell Park, Southend-on-Sea

Meta Culture in Southend will be hosting the sixth edition of Essex Writers House, a strand of programme within the brilliant Essex Book Festival.

This year marks the sixth edition of Essex Writers House, which will see three Writers in Residence, among them two Polish writers, Maciej Hen and Wioletta Greg, who audiences will be able to meet during the festival.

During their residencies in Southend, Maciej and Wioletta will be exploring the theme of ‘Writing : Home and Away’. They will explore the differences in their routines and settings, with Maciej mostly writing from home and Wioletta writing from many years as an expatriate.

Wioletta’s autobiographical work is inspired by her own lived experiences and memories, wheras Maciej’s historical novels are based in fiction. Come along to hear the two writers in conversation, meet fellow writers, connect with members of the Polish literary community and find space to share your own writing process with others.

Polish Fashion Stories: Unexpected Encounter – Batik

The earliest known examples of Polish batiks appeared around 1903 at an exhibition in Kraków, when the artist Jan Bukowski presented furniture upholstered in textiles decorated with what was called then “a manner of Easter eggs” - it was before the term batik had even entered the Polish language. From this point, other Kraków artists began to further explore the technique and its possibilities.
