‘Poles apart – Fixing the Underrepresentation of Poles in British Art’ – Panel Discussion

A discussion at Feliks Topolski's Studio to discuss and find solutions for the lack of representation of Poles in British art.

27th June, 6:15pm, Topolski Studio, Southbank London

A Panel Discussion entitled: ‘Poles apart – Bringing Cultures Together: how can we fix the chronic underrepresentation in the arts of one of the UK’s largest diasporas’

The event includes a Curators’ Tour of ‘Punks, Princes and Protests: The Chronicles of Feliks Topolski RA’ from 6:15pm followed by the panel discussion at 7pm of ‘Poles apart – Bringing Cultures Together: how can we fix the chronic underrepresentation in the arts of one of the UK’s largest diasporas’ 

The panel discussion will take the form of a conversation between Dr Marta de Zuniga, Director of the Polish Cultural Institute in London, Professor Andrzej Klimowski and Danusia Schejbal, foremost Anglo-Polish artists, Dr Paul Rennie, British 20th Century Art and Design Historian (Central Saint Martins) and Gallerist (Founder of Rennies Seaside Modern), and the Exhibition Co-Curators – Lucien Topolski, Director of Topolski Memoir charity and Dr Julia Griffin, Co-Curator of award-winning Young Poland and Curator of the Granville-Skarbek Anglo-Polish Cultural Exchange (APCE), a public programming forum originated by POSK (further speakers to be announced).

Polish Fashion Stories: Unexpected Encounter – Batik

The earliest known examples of Polish batiks appeared around 1903 at an exhibition in Kraków, when the artist Jan Bukowski presented furniture upholstered in textiles decorated with what was called then “a manner of Easter eggs” - it was before the term batik had even entered the Polish language. From this point, other Kraków artists began to further explore the technique and its possibilities.
