This captivating tale, now brought to life to the international audience by the skilled translator Paweł Szczerkowski, takes readers on an unforgettable journey to pre-WWII Poland for an adventure filled with mystery and intrigue.

Set in the summer of 1930s Warsaw, the story follows Adam, a brilliant high school student known for his exceptional problem-solving skills. Adam’s summer plans change abruptly when his history teacher convinces him to join him at his family country estate. Upon arrival, Adam is confronted with an unusual door mystery. It doesn’t take long for Adam to uncover the link between the vanishing doors and a hidden treasure, but as he soon discovers he is not the only one searching for it.

Kornel Makuszyński (1884-1953) is known to be one of Poland’s most prominent writers from the first half of the 20th century. He has also been elected to the prestigious Polish Academy of Literature. Known for his wit, rich similes, and references to Polish culture, history, and literature, Makuszyński’s works have captivated generations, and books such as “The Twelfth Grade Devil” remained a staple in Polish literature.

The story has been translated into several languages, including French, Slovak, Lithuanian, Belorussian, and Hebrew, and is now also available in English, thanks to the efforts of Paweł Szczerkowski.

Fascinated by Makuszyński’s unique use of language, rich with playful wordplay, Paweł Szczerkowski has been dedicated to translating Makuszyński’s works into English for several years. While working he has also received support from Mary Ashwood, an American writer and jury member for children’s literature. Szczerkowski was recognized by the University of Leeds, where his translation made it to the long list of the John Dryden Translation Competition.
