Theatre is Freedom | Teatr to Wolność, a dynamic outdoor theatre festival at Bell Square, London, running from 5–21 September 2025. As part of the UK/Poland Season 2025

Watermans is proud to present Theatre is Freedom | Teatr to Wolność, a dynamic outdoor theatre festival at Bell Square, London, running from 5–21 September 2025. As part of the UK/Poland Season 2025, this festival showcases six Polish theatre companies, including three making their UK debuts.

Festival Highlights:

  • Bal (The Ball) by Teatr KTO (5 Sept): A dance performance traversing eras—from the 1930s to the present—expressing the power of movement and rhythm.
  • Lost Dream by Teatr Osmego Dnia (12–13 Sept): A striking adaptation of Franz Kafka’s stories, blending narrative and performance art.
  • Tempest (working title) by Teatr Biuro Podróży (19–20 Sept): A vibrant reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic, exploring themes of magic, betrayal, and love.
  • DROM by Teatr Migro (6–7 Sept): A fast-paced journey through the history of the Roma people.
  • Monsieur Charlie by Teatr HOM (14 Sept): A charming tribute to Charlie Chaplin and the golden age of silent cinema.
  • Sztetl by Konin Dance Theatre (21 Sept): A poignant portrayal of the Jewish community in Konin before World War II.

This festival emphasizes theatre’s role in fostering understanding and empathy amidst societal divisions. As Jerzy Zoń, Director of Teatr KTO, states, “The power of theatre should be recognised for its ability to show reality from the perspective of different audiences.”

Free and Open to All: all performances are free of charge, offering an accessible cultural experience for the community. Watermans is grateful to its partners and supporters, including the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Polish Cultural Institute in London, and Arts Council England.

Join us at Bell Square for an unforgettable celebration of Polish theatre.

Polish Fashion Stories: Unexpected Encounter – Batik

The earliest known examples of Polish batiks appeared around 1903 at an exhibition in Kraków, when the artist Jan Bukowski presented furniture upholstered in textiles decorated with what was called then “a manner of Easter eggs” - it was before the term batik had even entered the Polish language. From this point, other Kraków artists began to further explore the technique and its possibilities.
