David Parr House presents Heatwave in Antarctic: Prints by Tadek Beutlich, a captivating exhibition celebrating the printmaking brilliance of post-war textile innovator Tadek Beutlich

David Parr House presents Heatwave in Antarctic: Prints by Tadek Beutlich, a captivating exhibition celebrating the printmaking brilliance of post-war textile innovator Tadek Beutlich (1922–2011). On view from 18 September to 10 January in the Studio Space at David Parr House, the exhibition is free to attend and open Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with advance booking recommended.

Exhibition Highlights:

  • Focused Period: The collection features Beutlich’s works from 1962 to 1967, including several prints created in collaboration with the influential publisher Editions Alecto.
  • Innovative Techniques: Known for his fearless experimentation, Beutlich blended unconventional materials and techniques across both textile and print forms. His approach extended to printmaking – characterized by bold, textural, and abstract relief prints. He carved his own blocks from lino, timber, natural elements, and even Lycra, famously walking on prints to achieve their distinct impressions – without the use of a printing press.
  • Artistic Continuity: Beutlich’s prints resonate deeply with his textile forms – organic, tactile, and expansive—demonstrating a seamless dialogue between mediums.
  • Partnership: The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Emma Mason Gallery, adding context and depth to Beutlich’s legacy.

Planning Your Visit:

  • Closed Dates: Please note the exhibition will be closed during the holiday period on 24–26 December and 31 December–1 January.
  • Venue Details: 184/186 Gwydir Street, Cambridge CB1 2LW. We recommend booking your visit in advance to ensure availability.

His tactile printmaking methods and fearless material experimentation offer fresh perspectives on post-war art and innovation. This exhibition invites you into an expressive, sensory experience – one that resonates as much visually as it does intellectually.

Polish Fashion Stories: Unexpected Encounter – Batik

The earliest known examples of Polish batiks appeared around 1903 at an exhibition in Kraków, when the artist Jan Bukowski presented furniture upholstered in textiles decorated with what was called then “a manner of Easter eggs” - it was before the term batik had even entered the Polish language. From this point, other Kraków artists began to further explore the technique and its possibilities.
