In Conversation: Elżbieta Moczarska & Sean Gasper Bye with Zoe Waxman

What happens when two enemies are forced to share the same prison cell?

Join us in Oxford for a thought-provoking evening exploring Conversations with an Executioner, the remarkable account of Kazimierz Moczarski, a Polish resistance fighter who was imprisoned by the new communist government alongside Jürgen Stroop, the Nazi officer responsible for crushing the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Through conversations recorded from memory after his imprisonment, Moczarski offered an extraordinary insight into the mind of a Nazi perpetrator, raising questions about history, responsibility, morality and the nature of evil.

We are delighted to welcome Elżbieta Moczarska, the author’s daughter and custodian of his literary legacy, and Sean Gasper Bye, translator of the acclaimed English edition, in conversation Zoe Waxman, Professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Oxford.

Together, they will explore the story behind the book, its historical significance and why its message remains so relevant today.

Whether you are interested in history, literature, translation, Polish heritage or the ways we remember the past, notably the Holocaust, this promises to be a fascinating and meaningful discussion.

Mother Joan of the Angels – 4k

This landmark of Polish cinema is based on the infamous ‘demonic possession’ of a group of nuns in Loudun, France in 1634, which led to a priest being burnt at the stake. These scandalous events also inspired Aldous Huxley’s 1952 novel The Devils of Loudon, and Ken Russell’s notorious 1971 film The Devils.
