Polish Film Talk & Screening (Sweat) @ Watermans Arts

Michael Brooke introduces and discusses the 2021 Polish film Sweat as part of Watermans' Kino! season, celebrating contemporary Polish cinema

21st January, 1pm (Film Talk 60 mins ) 2:30pm (Screening 106 mins), Watermans Arts

Michael Brooke (freelance writer specialising in central/Eastern European cinema) introduces and discusses the 2021 Polish film Sweat as part of Watermans’ Kino! season, celebrating contemporary Polish cinema.

Director Magnus von Horn is originally from Sweden but studied as a film director at the famous Polish Film School in Łódź, where he now works and continues to develop his directing career.

Film Talk ( 1-2pm) – There is a small break to allow you to get some refreshments before watching the film and there is some time after the film to ask further questions.

Michael Brooke will be giving an extensively illustrated talk about foreigners making films in Poland, like Sweat director Magnus von Horn, The Peasants co-director Hugh Welchman and the Polish-born but UK-raised Paweł Pawlikowski, as well as the more common phenomenon of Polish filmmakers working abroad, not always voluntarily, for instance Walerian Borowczyk, Roman Polanski, Jerzy Skolimowski, Andrzej Wajda and Andrzej Żuławski.

Sweat (15) (2.30pm – 4:15pm)

Life for fitness guru Sylwia is non-stop. The division between professional and personal is one that she can little afford. After all, as an influencer, her followers demand to know about every moment of her existence. But though she has a huge following, Sylwia appears to have no one close to her, a fact made clear in a teary online confession about being single. Coming so close to a major national TV appearance, could this revelation threaten her profile? Or is it in fact just another stunt by someone who recognises that bad publicity is an oxymoron in our mediated age?

Winner of eight 2020 Polish Film Festival Awards including Best Director – Magnus von Horn, Best Actress in a Feature Film – Magdalena Kolesnik, Best Cinematography in a Feature Film – Michel Dymek
