HOW COULD I POSSIBLY LEAVE THEM ALONE? ON JEWISH CARERS DURING THE WAR

How could I possibly leave them alone? – A meeting with Monika Sznajderman, one of the author of the book “How could I possibly leave them alone? On Jewish carers during the war”.

12:15 – At the Library of the Haifa University

19:00 – At The Polish Institute in Tel Aviv

In English

Monika Sznajderman is a cultural anthropologist, publisher and a writer. Since 1996 co-owner Polish publishing houses Czarne. In her successful book “Pepper forgers. Family history” she correlates stories about her Jewish father and Polish mother. As she writes herself “It is a book about the memory. Two memories, actually – which do not meet in any point”. From this perspective she asks questions about general folk memory and relations between two nations – first of all in her own family. These questions remain up-to-date and demand lots of courage.

During the meeting we will mainly talk about other books of the author, dealing with the memory: “How could I possibly leave them alone? On Jewish carers during the war”
Book about the Jewish women who during the war devoted themselves to caring for orphaned or sick children and so often, without trying to save themselves, were with them until the end.
Book about role of woman during the war.
In addition, the newest book – “Empty wood”. We will also try to find an answer on question, how is the contemporary Polish book market dealing with the Polish-Jewish subjects, and what is the role of a publisher in bringing back memory of minorities in Poland.

Haifa meeting – conducted by Dr. Anat Vaturi

Tel Aviv meeting –  conducted by Karolina Przewrocka-Aderet, journalist, and also one of the authors of the book “How could I possibly leave them alone? On Jewish carers during the war”.
