The Polish Institute in Tel Aviv invites audiences to two special free concerts of the Escape from the Shadows project, performed by violist Aleksandra Demowska-Madejska and pianist Wojciech Pyrć.
Recognized for its contribution to uncovering forgotten chapters of Polish musical heritage, the project emerged from extensive musicological research aimed at locating, reconstructing, and reintroducing works that had disappeared from concert repertoires for decades. Combining historical research with artistic performance, the program offers a fascinating journey into the world of composers who worked in Poland during the 19th and 20th centuries, but whose music was pushed into obscurity by war, migration, persecution, and the upheavals of history.
The concert program features works by Aleksander Weryk, Karol Rathaus, and Ignacy Friedman, alongside an exceptional piece: the Sonata for Viola and Piano by Etta Tyrmand, a Jewish composer born in Warsaw. Long considered lost, the sonata was rediscovered and received its world-premiere recording as part of this project.
Through music, the program explores themes of identity, memory, belonging, and cultural continuity. Each work tells a unique human and historical story, offering audiences a rare opportunity to discover a moving and little-known repertoire that enriches our understanding of both Polish and Jewish musical heritage.
