4th October, 19:00, Westminster City Hall London
The historic venue of the first United Nations meeting will host the UK premiere of Sven Helbig’s latest work, REQUIEM A. The four boys’ choirs will perfrom alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra all under the direction of Martin Lehmann, Cantor of the Dresden Kreuzchor. Renowned bass René Pape, celebrated for his performances with both the Berlin State Opera and New York’s Metropolitan Opera, will appear as the soloist.
Exploring grief, memory, and renewal, the piece resonates deeply with the history and spirit of the venue.
Sven Helbig notes: “Never before has one of my concerts carried such intensity – on a
personal, artistic, and political level. I began Requiem A in a state of deep disillusionment
and, thanks to my daughter, brought it to completion with renewed hope. To now share this
work in London alongside such outstanding artists is profoundly meaningful to me.”
Known for exploring the intersection of classical tradition and contemporary sound, Sven
Helbig combines orchestral and choral writing with electronics. With REQUIEM A, he offers a
meditation on human resilience and the possibility of new beginnings – inspired in part by
conversations with his daughter Ida, who encouraged the symbolism behind the title. As
Helbig explains: “Requiem A mourns, yet turns toward a future that can only be realised
through togetherness. For me, this vision is fulfilled when four European children’s choirs
gather in London beneath a vast, overarching ‘A’ – Anfang, the German word for
‚beginning’.”
The Requiem’s nine sections move the listener from collective memory to personal reflection.
Bass arias bookend the work, with René Pape delivering performances that Helbig describes
as “ideal for capturing the universal themes of grief and renewal.”
The Poznań Boys’ Choir reflects on their own country’s history: “As Poles, mindful of the
tragic wartime experiences of our country, the opportunity to participate in a concert
commemorating the victims of wars and violence holds a very special meaning.” Similarly, La
Maîtrise de Garçons de Colmar, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, underscores the
significance of the performance: “Performing Requiem A with choirs from across Europe is a
highlight, reflecting the values of sharing, openness, and remembrance that guide us.” Nick
Mulroy, Director of the Trinity Boys’ Choir, adds: “It will be a joy to see young people from
all four countries working together to create something beautiful, powerful, and eloquent.”
