LFA: Focus on Polish Perspectives

Series of short lectures online by top architecture academics and online premiere of documentary about architectural historian and critic - Joseph Rykwert.

In a series of short lectures online top academics will discuss several lesser-known aspects of Polish architecture. The project aims to re-discover the Polish urban landscape and celebrate its diversity. Part of the London Festival of Architecture Digital. 27-29 June 2020.

Dr Jane Hall, RCA, will speak about the long-overlooked women’s contribution to architecture, highlighting the most important female architects of the twentieth century such as Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawryluk – the author of some strikingly sculptural high-rise housing blocks in Wrocław in the 1970s. 28 June, 11AM.

Dr Michał Murawski, UCL, will focus on the most important examples of architectural ‘resistance movement’ in Warsaw which emerged in response to Stalinist policy in 1950s. He will also compare the situation in Soviet Russia at a similar time and analyse the fate of the late 1950s and early 1960s modernism in Warsaw today. 29 June, 11 AM.

Dr Urszula Szulakowska, Leeds University, will talk about highlights of the architecture in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and about co-existence between ethnic and religious groups in the 15th and 16th centuries. 27 June, 11AM.





Conversations with Joseph Rykwert

30 June 2020, 5.30PM

This never seen before documentary, ‘Conversations with Joseph Rykwert’, is the architect’s testimony about his youth, family and the early days of his career. Rykwert goes back to places and cities which have had the biggest impact on him personally and professionally, and remarks on the condition of contemporary architecture.

The film, initiated, funded and created by the Polish Cultural Institute in London, celebrates the remarkable life of one of the most important architectural historians and critics of the twentieth century.
