Mother Tongue – A Multilingual Theatre Performance at Voila! Festival 2026

Every full moon, a sisterhood emerges from the earth, determined to have its stories heard. These women are neither malicious nor evil. They refuse to be dismissed or forgotten. Through a combination of theatrical scenes, movement and original live music, Mother Tongue explores what happens after violence, focusing on survival and the reclaiming of personal narratives.
The production brings together an international ensemble of six female performers. Their voices create a multilingual chorus, incorporating English alongside Flemish Dutch, Spanish, Polish, Bosnian, Portuguese and Gaelic Irish. The original score, composed by Ciara Cogley, features live vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and violin.
Written and directed by Gabrielle Hofmann, with music direction by Ciara Cogley, Mother Tongue is produced by Out of Place Theatre in collaboration with the London-based charity Women & Girls Network.
