A sentimental meeting with Yaron Karol Becker on the autobiography published in Poland entitled
"In total together" took place on February 10, 2023 at the Library of the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv
The first volume of Beckers autobiography was published in Poland in 2022 by “Książka i Wiedza
Publishing House”. In the book the author talks about his childhood, family history during the war
and emigration to Israel. With the readers of the library, he revealed stories about first love, the
dream of receiving Henryk Sienkiewicz's "Trilogy" for his thirteenth birthday, or the secrets of a
teenage boy living in the People’s Republic of Poland.
Talking about the idea of writing the book, which was born during a long stay in Poland in 2008, he
admitted: It was no coincidence that I was encouraged by Polish friends to write the story of my life in
Polish. It was no coincidence that it came relatively easy to me. The very title of the book reflects a
mishmash of my identities. And there are four of them: Polish, Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew. I feel like
a witness of an era. If I didn't have that impulse, I wouldn't have written this book. My goal was to
explain to the audience and my loved ones my attachment to Poland and to show the positives of this
bond.
During the meeting, the Author sat next to his close friends – meeting moderator Dani Tracz (cultural
activist, publisher) and Włodzimierz Zeev Cynamon. My story is also their story. They were born in
Russia, raised in Poland. And like me, they emigrated to Israel. They went through the same stages of
growing into new soil, Becker said.
Among the audience there were mainly Israelis from Poland, Polish Jews who, like Yaron K. Becker,
came to Israel in the 1950s. All the circumstances of the 1940s and 1950s were common from 72
Kazimierzowska Street in Warsaw. The same Polish and Russian books – added Jerzy Press, the
author's friend from childhood.
You wrote a book for the Polish audience. They don't know our history. I, on the other hand, wrote
down my story in Hebrew for my daughter – Adam Gryniewicz, one of the participants in the meeting,
shared his story.
Yaron Karol Becker is a philosopher, historian, journalist, educator, translator and social activist. In
the years 2001-2007 he worked at the Polish Institute as a coordinator of educational programs,
being the first to pave the way for cooperation with the Israeli Ministry of Education, organizing,
among others, seminars for local teachers and educators.
